  • Occupational Outlook Handbook
    The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a source of career information designed to provide assistance to individuals making decisions about their future work lives. Revised every two years, the Handbook describes what workers do on the job, working conditions, the training and education needed, earnings, and expected job prospects in a wide range of occupations.

  • Riley Guide: Employment Opportunities and Job Resources on the Internet
    Highly recommended for career and job hunting resources including sections on how write resumes, target and research employers, salary guides, job listing sites, and sites by occupation. The A-Z index integrates all this information into a handy alphabetical list that is useful for finding both career information and job listings for most occupations. Also includes directories for newspapers, phone, and businesses. Provides good advice on job hunting via the Internet.
  • Career Guides to Industries
    The U.S. Department of Labor has career information for over 42 industries. Covers working conditions, employment, occupations, training and advancement, earnings and benefits, employment outlook, and lists of organizations that can provide additional information.
  • ISEEK
    ISEEK, the Internet System for Education and Employment Knowledge, is a web-based gateway to Minnesota career, employment, education, and business development information and services. The Internet system helps you make smart choices about careers, employment, education, and business growth.
  • CareerOneStop
    U.S. Dept. of Labor created CareerOneStop in partnership with the states of Minnesota and New York. This powerful suite of national electronic tools includes - America's Job Bank for postings of jobs, America's Career InfoNet, or wage and employment trends, occupational requirements, and state-by-state labor markets and America's Service Locator to find nearby services for workers and employers.
  • JobWeb
    Organized directory from the National Association of College and Employers has links for job hunting, career and salary information by industry. Targets the undergraduate or graduate student considering various factors and employment related decisions. Includes surveys, evaluates occupations and provides advice on every aspect of job hunting.
  • JobStar
    Job and career advice with an emphasis on California. Includes salary finder, telephone lines, and Ask Electra tips and ideas to reach the hidden job market. Guides to resumes resources and cover letters on the web.
  • Princeton Review
    Career planning and job hunting aimed at the recent college graduate. Includes book reviews.
  • ScienceCareers.org
    Produced by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, ScienceCareers.org (formerly NextWave) is a career guide for scientists. It includes salary surveys, job listings, and articles of interest to the job seeker in a broad range of scientific disciplines.

  • netLibrary Authentication Required

    Collection of guides on all aspects of job hunting and to occupations along with insider guides to specific companies. Claims over 1000 snapshots of prominent companies that gives most recent sales and employment statistics. Profiles major cities along with major employers and links to location specific sites like newspapers. Includes salary data and offers more detailed job hunting services and publications for a fee.

    Official site jobs and employment with U.S. federal government.
  • General Services Administration
    Over 1 million are employed under this agency to perform much of the business operations for the United States government. Site explains GSA job classifications, listings, web based staffing and recruitment for vacancy announcements and electronic notification.
  • Department of Employee Relations
    This department represents the State of Minnesota as its central human resource office, serving state workers and the departments, agencies and offices within the Executive Branch.
  • Network for the Chronicle of Higher Education
    Online version of the job listings for the Chronicle of Higher Education, the weekly new source for higher education. Current job listings for positions available in post-secondary institutions and some non-profit organizations.
  • Academic360
    Links to job announcements from over 2,400 colleges and universities in the US, Canada, Australia, and UK. Gateway to the Human Resources departments responsible for filling professional and civil service positions in post-secondary institutions. Lists teaching and other faculty positions by subject discipline.
  • Direct Employers
    Very large database of global job listings managed by employers through E-Recruiting Association, Inc., a non-profit employer association. Lists of positions will link to the job descriptions posted by the corporation very similar to Monster. Excellent search interface for customized searches. Registration and resume postings are optional.
  • Minnesota Council of Nonprofits
    Statewide membership association of nonprofit organizations sharing information, services and research. Includes over 1300 members representing all activity areas, budget ranges, and geographic regions of Minnesota. Libraries will generally purchase publications from The Council. Actively mangages job listings for the nonprofit sector.
  • NonProfit Times
    Business publication for nonprofit management includes classifieds and the ability to post a resume. Includes annual salary survey.
  • PNN Online
    Web site for news, information, and resources for people working for nonprofit and philanthropic organizations. The Career Center has job listings in the non-profit sector that include job details. PNN acts as a clearinghouse for the job descriptions so you can apply online using their web based form but the contacts for a formal application are also available.
Locating Companies & Organizations
  • LexisNexis Company Information Authentication Required
    LexisNexis Academic includes company directories, profiles, stock reports and financial data public companies from Dun and Bradstreet and Thompson Financial. Select BUSINESS > Dossier Create a Company List
  • Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage Authentication Required
    This Standard and Poors database includes overviews from the Industry Surveys tracking trends and leading companies in 52 industries. Company profiles in the Stock Reports with key financial data on public companies including peer group analysis and performance ratings from Standard Poors. Directory listings from the Register of Corporations, Directors, and Executives listing sales, products, other brief information for 55,000 public and private companies along with names of top executives.
Nonprofits
  • Associations Unlimited Authentication Required
    The online version of Encyclopedia of Associations, a key source for information on associations and professional societies from around the world.
Salary Guides
  • Abbott Langer & Associates
    Recruitment firm that collects salary data from over 7000 participating organizations. Free summery data for selected fields including information technology, marketing/sales, accounting, engineering, human resources, consulting, manufacturing, nonprofits, and legal professions.
  • Minnesota Salary Survey
    Minnesota Workforce Center data on wages and salaries for different occupations and geographic locations. Includes salary conversion charts for hourly, daily, monthly, and annual earnings.
  • National Compensation Survey
    The most widely used statistics are produced by the U.S. Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. This link is to their National Compensation Study. Detailed statistics on earnings, employment and other trends in compensation also found at http://stats.bls.gov/ncs/ocs/.
  • Job Smart Salary Survey
    Regional salary information from Career Journal with general salary surveys and surveys by occupation.
  • SalaryReview.Com
    Fee based firm from the United Kingdom that offers online international salary survey data for over 200 cities. Provides job descriptions on over 400 positions that useful for employers and resumes.
