Rankings
  • Top American Research Universities
The Top American Research Universities report, from the Center for Measuring University Performance, at Arizona State U (formerly located at the U of Florida), charts the comparative performance and offers analysis and data useful for understanding American research university performance. A key feature of this report (available online and in print) is The Center's classification of universities into groups based upon nine quality indicators. Institutions that have more than $20 million in annual federal research expenditures and that rank within the top 25 on at least one of the nine measures fall into their definition of a top research university. In this study, they also present a second group of institutions--those ranking 26-50 on the same nine measures.

  • Essential Science Indicators Authentication Required
This analytical tool offers data for ranking scientists, institutions, countries, and journals. ESI thus enables researchers to conduct ongoing, quantitative analyses of research performance and track trends in science. The compilation of science performance statistics and trends data is based on journal article publication counts and citation data from Thomson Scientific databases, which track a multidisciplinary selection of over 11,000 journals from around the world. Specifically, using ESI, one can:
    • Determine the research output and impact in specific fields of research
    • Rank top countries, journals, scientists, institutions and companies by field of research
    • Evaluate potential employees, collaborators, reviewers, and peers
  • US News and World Report College Rankings
"To be included in the {US News} rankings, a college or university must be accredited and have a total enrollment of at least 200 students. Also, we do not rank certain schools for school-specific reasons, such as the undergraduate student population consisting almost entirely of non-traditional students. In addition, 77 of the approximately 1,400 accredited institutions in the United States are specialty institutions that offer most or all of their degrees in fine arts, performing arts, business, or engineering. We don't rank specialty schools or the five uniformed service academies, because their mission is very different from the other undergraduate institutions and there are too few to create a separate category. This year, however, we are ranking 350 accredited undergraduate business programs and 322 accredited undergraduate engineering programs. This information can be used as a supplement to the overall rankings for students with an interest in these majors."
