We realize that many of our alumni would like to continue remote access to all of the Libraries' online databases and e-journals after graduation. Unfortunately, current vendor licensing restrictions for most of these resources force us to restrict access from outside a University library (e.g., from home or workplace) to current students (in credit-earning courses), staff, and faculty at the University of Minnesota -- Twin Cities.
However, alumni do have some other online databases available remotely. Here are some options that you may find useful :
1) Databases Freely Available Over the InternetThere are a number of databases available at no charge over the Internet that
can assist you in locating journal articles by a particular author or on a particular
topic. These are some databases our librarians recommend, based on their quality
and reliability :

2) Google Scholar
Google Scholar enables you to search specifically for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research. Use Google Scholar to find articles from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities, as well as scholarly articles available across the web.
3) Electronic
Library for Minnesota
Electronic Library for Minnesota (ELM)
is a Web-based virtual library containing online magazines, newspapers, journal
articles, and information from encyclopedias, almanacs, directories, and other
resources. ELM is a compilation of thorough and accurate information that is
easily accessible. These resources are licensed by the MINITEX Library Information
Network with state appropriations from the Minnesota Higher Education Services
Office (MHESO) and the Minnesota Department of Education.
ELM resources are available through all Minnesota public libraries. If you have a library card you have access to these resources from any remote location. For more information, please see the ELM website or the website of your local Minnesota public library.
If you are one of our alumni residing in a state other than Minnesota, it is very likely that your state has a similar program. Check with your local public library for more information.
4) Onsite Access in the University Libraries
Alumni and members of the public are also invited to use both print and online University Libraries' resources on-site from workstations within the Libraries. We have structured our licensing agreements with most database providers to make this possible. One does not need a card or pass to enter and use our libraries. You are also invited to read materials in the Libraries or make photocopies of needed pages.
