The MINITEX Library Information Network is a publicly supported network of libraries in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota, working cooperatively to improve library service, and is located at the University of Minnesota. MINITEX's mission is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of participating libraries by expanding their access to information resources through conventional and innovative means. MINITEX provides substantial opportunities for personal and professional development. MINITEX seeks qualified applicants for part-time cataloger positions. These catalogers will work with staff at MINITEX to provide contract cataloging services for MINITEX/OCLC libraries. These libraries need a variety of cataloging services, from completing backlogs, to ongoing cataloging, to specialized language and format cataloging.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the MINITEX Contract Cataloging Manager, the Catalogers will catalog material for libraries contracting with MINITEX for this service. Establishing good working relationships with colleagues and staff of participating libraries and at MINITEX is essential. Maintaining awareness of professional issues and developing skills required to maintain a high level of professional proficiency are expected.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: ALA-accredited master's degree in Library Science or foreign equivalent completed at the time of applications. Minimum of one year's experience copy and original cataloging with books and an additional bibliographic format. Working knowledge of basic cataloging principles, the MARC formats, and OCLC Cataloging Service. Flexibility, demonstrated organizational skills, and the ability to work independently. These positions are based at the libraries that contract with MINITEX or at the University. Adequate transportation.
PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WITH: Cataloging experience with other additional bibliographic formats. Two or more years' cataloging experience. Additional foreign language skills. Familiarity with the PALSTAC or command-driven MnSCU/PALS or with MnPALS.
APPOINTMENT: These positions are available as cataloging contracts warrant. These are University of Minnesota part-time positions, with variable number of hours per week, at the Assistant Librarian rank. Salary is $18.50/hour.
