Associate University Librarian for Information Technology
The University of Minnesota Libraries seek visionary and creative leadership for the position of Associate University Librarian for Information Technology (AUL-IT). Reporting to the University Librarian, the AUL provides administrative and programmatic leadership for information technologies in the University Libraries system, a large, comprehensive enterprise on the UM-Twin Cities campus. The AUL oversees a growing division of the Libraries and plays a significant role within the campus IT enterprise.
The University’s recent strategic positioning process, coupled with increased investment in the Libraries, creates a rich context for program development and innovation. The University’s positioning includes restructured colleges to enhance interdisciplinary and collaborative research, emphases on the undergraduate experience, and investments in campus technology infrastructure. The Libraries program agenda emphasizes campus collaboration and integration of library resources and services within the teaching, learning, research, and service activities of Minnesota’s flagship campus.
The University Libraries have a record of notable technology development and significant opportunities for campus collaboration. These assets and opportunities include:
- Systems such as LibData, the Undergraduate Virtual Library, UThink Blog service, University Digital Conservancy, and recent investment in social tools.
- A development partnership with Ex Libris to re-conceive discovery and delivery of information resources and re-purpose bibliographic data.
- A recently completed technology assessment that lays the groundwork for an active staff education curriculum.
- Recent funding support for digital video and image services.
- A Libraries organization that is committed to ongoing behavioral and needs assessment to inform services.
- A strong partnership with the campus IT organization, a well-developed collaboration on IT infrastructure and architecture, and significant potential for customized delivery of services through the University’s portal.
- Research partnerships with departments such as Computer Science that enable exploration of tools for content delivery and management, as well as infrastructure for campus and inter-institutional collaborative environments.
Collaboration within the library community, broadly realized, is a priority. Legislative support has created a mature state network for cooperation and resource sharing, including highly-valued systems and services through MINITEX (an affiliate organization of the University Libraries). State programs include coordinated library systems, a common MnLINK gateway, significant licensed resources (Electronic Library of Minnesota) and the Minnesota Digital Library (digitization program). The University Libraries also invest in consortial and other programs of collaborative technology development, including within the CIC (Big 10+), the Research Libraries Group Programs, and Digital Library Federation.
The Associate University Librarian holds administrative responsibilities for four program groups: Central Operations (systems), Computer Support (desktop), Digital Library Development Lab (including Digital Collections Unit), and Library Enterprise Operations (Aleph and other organization-wide systems). Affiliated IT programs in the Health Sciences Libraries and MINITEX afford additional expertise and support. Resources encompass 36 FTE with budget resources of $3.5 million. The AUL serves as a member of the Libraries’ executive group and contributes to Libraries’ strategic planning, resource, and policy development.
Core roles and responsibilities include: strategic planning, resource allocation and management, assessment, and policy development for the Information Technology division; administrative oversight for development and production systems; collaboration within the Libraries to create coherent technology planning and service implementation; active contribution to campus academic technology development and state/consortial/collaborative technology programs.
