Original Cataloger/Cataloging Project Manager
The University of Minnesota Libraries seek a creative, forward looking professional, who will provide leadership as Original Cataloger/Cataloging Project Manager in a service-oriented environment with demonstrated commitment to innovative approaches to cataloging and the use of technology to enhance and expand intellectual access. The Original Cataloger & Cataloging Project Manager reports to the Head of the Specialized Cataloging Section and works in collaboration with the Principal Cataloger and section managers and librarians responsible for authority control, metadata, music, serials, special formats, and acquisitions. The Technical Services Department includes Specialized Cataloging, Monographs Acquisitions and Cataloging, Serials Acquisitions, Database Management, and Technical Services-St. Paul.

Responsibilities: The Original Cataloger/Cataloging Project Manager is the primary monographs original cataloger and is responsible for leading and/or contributing to selected cataloging projects for large batch acquisitions and uncataloged collections in a variety of formats and languages. These projects may be outsourced or managed internally.
- Monitors national cataloging standards, rules, trends and best practices for monograph and project cataloging, engages staff broadly in issues, and initiates local action as needed.
- Leads in local implementation of changes in national standards, rules and best practices for monograph cataloging.
- Develops (in consultation) and communicates local monographic cataloging policies and practice; monitors their application to ensure consistency.
- In consultation with the Principal Cataloger and appropriate staff, helps to determine needs, design training curricula, coordinate and deliver training and establish performance and competency standards.
- Participates in the Cataloging Coordinating Group, which establishes cataloging policy for the Twin Cities and the University's Coordinate Campus Libraries, taking the lead on issues as appropriate. Participates in other committees including the Original Cataloging Forum and serves as a liaison to other units as needed.
- Performs original cataloging and authority work in selected areas.
- Manages and contributes to cataloging and digital projects based on department priorities.
Qualifications
Required:- Masters' degree from an American Library Association accredited library school or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience
- A minimum of three years experience cataloging in an online environment
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated creatively, initiative, and self-direction, and an ability to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a service-oriented, research intensive environment
- Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging standards, practice, and products, including but not limited to LC classification, LCSH, MARC formats, AACR2, LCRIs.
- Demonstrated active engagement in professional activities and organizations
- Demonstrated experience with cataloging a variety of materials or formats (monographs, serials, videos/DVDs, electronic, etc.)
- Demonstrated experience in analyzing workflow and operations, and planning and managing cataloging projects.
- Experience in an academic or research library context
- Experience with a national cooperative cataloging program such as PCC (NACO, BIBCO, or SACO)
- Experience with Aleph (Ex Libris) software
- Working knowledge of one or more Western European and/or Asian language
- supervisory experience
